Treatment Philosophy & Focus

Therapy can be many things: rewarding, healing, challenging- but I believe it should always be done in partnership. I see change in counseling happening through a strong therapeutic relationship built on mutual trust and collaboration. I will work with you to build insight and understanding using interventions and strategies tailored to meet your unique needs. We will collaborate together to make goals and work toward them in a supportive, affirming environment. I always emphasize that each person is the expert on their lived experience and will check in to make sure you are personally experiencing the change you deserve.

It takes bravery to reach out and find someone to talk with, working through struggles that are so common, but so often stigmatized. It is worth recognizing how much it means that you’ve taken this first step. I encourage you to contact me to see if it might be a good fit and start the journey toward mental well-being and personal fulfillment.

Education & Experience

Murphy is a licensed psychologist and has been in the field of counseling for more than six years. Murphy has a BA in film and psychology from New York University, a Master’s in School Administration from NC State University, and a Master’s and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee. Before entering the counseling field, Murphy spent over a decade in public education, as a teacher and administrator.

After working in university counseling centers for over six years, Murphy practiced as a generalist and has extensive experience working with a wide-array of mental health struggles. Murphy believes that all mental health struggles are affected by all the various identities we bring to therapy, as well as the backgrounds we come from. What has happened in the past often affects the present and future. By gaining insight into our old ways of thinking and being, new changes can emerge and a new sense of personal choice can be developed.
